This editorial reflects the complexity of life in the People’s Republic of Poland, a communist state where citizens lived under a duality of existence. Under a regime that demanded conformity, personal free- dom became something to be reclaimed in the margins - after work, behind closed doors, or through subtle expressions of individuality. A seemingly mundane sign at a hairdressing salon reading “The salon is open when I am free” becomes a poignant symbol of this reality. In these moments of personal agency, people found ways to nurture a sense of self that resisted the broader pressures of a state built on control and illusion.
